JOE LOPEZ NAMED FCSAA/NJCAA REGION 8 ALL-STATE; FOUR SEAHAWKS SELECTED ALL-SOUTHERN CONFERENCE

 
   Joe Lopez was named FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 All-State and first team All-Southern Conference. Deandre Turner was selected first team all-conference and Adam Traore and Jaquan McKennon received second team honors.

 
   Lopez led the Seahawks in field goals (186), offensive rebounds (142), defensive rebounds (249), total rebounds (391) and blocked shots (52). During the 2015-16 season, Lopez twice received recognition from the FCSAA by being named 

 
NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week (Nov. 10 and Feb. 23).

 
   Turner was tops in field goal attempts (414), three-point attempts (235), three-pointers (95), three-point percentage (40.4), free throw attempts (174), free throws (149), free throw percentage (85.6) and points (614). Traore finished second in free throw attempts (164), free throws (124), offensive rebounds (86), defensive rebounds (117) and total rebounds (203). McKennon was first in assists with 183.


 
JOE LOPEZ NAMED NJCAA REGION 8 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

 
   Joe Lopez was named NJCAA Region 8 Player of the Week on Feb. 23. In four games, Lopez averaged 20.8 points, 18 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. The sophomore forward connected on 36 of 57 field goals (63 percent) and 11 of 16 free throws. Lopez posted a double-double in each game and matched a season-high 28 points against ASA College on Feb. 20 and grabbed a season-high 23 rebounds versus Palm Beach State on Feb. 16. Lopez also received Player of the Week honors on Nov. 10 after averaging 12.5 points, 18.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in two games.

   According to the latest NJCAA statistics (Mar. 1), Joe Lopez is fourth in rebounds per game (12.6) and 27th in field goal percentage (60.4). Jaquan McKennon is eighth in assists per game (6.8) and Deandre Turner is 15th in points per game (21.2).​

Feb. 3 - Broward 79 ASA College 64
Deandre Turner scored 29 points to lead the Seahawks over the Silver Storm at Hialeah. Adam Traore produced 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Joe Lopez posted a double-double (10 points, 13 rebounds) and blocked one shot. Alaowei Talent recorded 10 points, eight rebounds and one block. Jaron Cornish contributed 10 points, four assists and two steals.

 
Feb. 6 - Broward 77 Miami Dade 70
Joe Lopez registered a double-double (25 points, 14 rebounds) to help the Seahawks defeat the Sharks at A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. Adam Traore also posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jaron Cornish produced 16 points, four assists, four steals and one blocked shot. Deandre Turner tallied 11 points and one block.

 
Feb. 9 - Eastern Florida State 83 Broward 61
Joe Lopez recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, but the Seahawks fell to the Titans at Melbourne. Deandre Turner scored 12 points and Jaron Cornish added 11. Cornish made five assists and had four steals. Adam Traore contributed nine points, six rebounds and four steals. Eastern Florida entered the game ranked first in the state and seventh in the nation.

 
Feb. 13 - Broward 93 Indian River State 92
Jaron Cornish posted team-highs in points (21) and steals (four) to help the Seahawks edge the Pioneers at Davie. Joe Allen and Deandre Turner each tallied 18 points. Adam Traore scored 13 points and Alaowei Talent added 10. Joe Lopez pulled down eight rebounds and Talent grabbed seven. Jaquan McKennon dished-out eight assists. Cornish and Lopez each blocked a shot.

 
Feb. 16 - Palm Beach State 91 Broward 69
Joe Lopez registered a double-double with 19 points and a season-high 23 rebounds, but the Seahawks suffered a defeat to the Panthers at Lake Worth. Deandre Turner contributed 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Joe Allen poured-in 13 points and Jaron Cornish added 11. Jaquan McKennon made six assists and Adam Traore had three steals.

 
Feb. 18 - Broward 86 ASA College 82
Deandre Turner scored a season-high 33 points to lead the host Seahawks over the Silver Storm in the regular season finale. Joe Lopez posted a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds. Jaron Cornish had 13 points and four steals. Jaquan McKennon dished-out seven assists and Adam Traore blocked two shots. Broward advanced to the Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed.

 
Feb. 20 - Broward 112 ASA College 97 (Southern Conference Tournament - First Round)
Deandre Turner registered 31 points and Joe Lopez recorded a double-double (28 points, 16 rebounds) to help the Seahawks defeat the No. 6 seed Silver Storm at Central Campus. Jaron Cornish contributed 14 points and six assists. Adam Traore produced 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Broward moved on to semifinals to face No. 4 seed Indian River State.

 
Feb. 21 - Broward 90 Indian River State 87 (Southern Conference Tournament - Semifinals)
Joe Lopez and Adam Traore each scored 22 points to lift the Seahawks over the Pioneers at Davie. Lopez and Traore each posted double-doubles by pulling down 15 and 10 rebounds respectively. Deandre Turner scored 20 points and Alaowei Talent added 10. Jaquan McKennon made five assists. Broward advanced to the championship game against No. 2 seed Palm Beach State.

 
Feb. 22 - Palm Beach State 88 Broward 82 (Southern Conference Tournament - Championship)
Deandre Turner scored 23 points and Adam Traore recorded a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds), but the Seahawks fell to the Panthers in the Southern Conference Tournament championship game at Lake Worth. Jaquan McKennon and Alaowei Talent each registered 11 points. Joe Lopez contributed nine points, 15 rebounds and two blocks. Broward finished the season with a 19-13 record.​

Deandre Turner posted a double-double (29 points, 10 rebounds) to lead the Seahawks over the Silver Storm at A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. Kyanti Blyden tallied 20 points and nine rebounds. Boycott Powell had a double-double (12 points,12 rebounds). Jaron Cornish scored 10 points, Adam Traore grabbed 10 boards and Turner made five steals.

Deandre Turner scored 29 points and made three steals to help the Seahawks defeat the Sharks at Kendall. Turner hit 6 of 15 field goals, 5 of 8 three-pointers and 12 of 12 free throws. Jaquan McKennon contributed 19 points and seven assists. Adam Traore tallied 13 points and seven rebounds. Joe Lopez grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked two shots. Boycott Powell pulled down nine rebounds and blocked a shot.

 
Jan. 25 - Eastern Florida State 81 Broward 67
Jaquan McKennon recorded a double-double (19 points, 10 assists), but the Seahawks bowed to the Titans at Davie. Deandre Turner scored 14 points and Joe Allen added 10. Adam Traore contributed nine points, nine rebounds and three steals. Joe Lopez grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots.

Adam Traore scored 17 points and Jaquan McKennon added 15, but the Seahawks fell to the Pioneers at Fort Pierce. Joe Lopez pulled down 10 rebounds and Traore grabbed eight. Kyanti Blyden and Omar Outar each registered nine points. Jaron Cornish contributed three assists, two steals and two blocks.

 
Jan. 30 - Broward 71 Palm Beach State 68
Omar Outar came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points and lead the Seahawks to an upset victory over the Panthers at Davie. Palm Beach State entered the game ranked 17th in the NJCAA (Jan. 26). Outar connected on 6 of 11 three-pointers and 3 of 4 free throws. Adam Traore tallied 16 points and nine rebounds. Joe Lopez recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alaowei Talent tallied 12 points and nine rebounds. Jaron Cornish registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.

Deandre Turner scored 19 points and Joe Lopez posted a double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds), but the Seahawks fell to the Eagles at Winter Haven. Jaquan McKennon and Adam Traore each had eight points. Traore and Turner each grabbed seven rebounds. McKennon dished out four assists and Lopez made two steals. Lopez, Boycott Powell and Alaowei Talent each blocked two shots. The loss ended a five-game winning streak.

 
Jan. 4 - Johnson & Wales University 79 Broward 76
Deandre Turner scored 16 points and Adam Traore added 14, but the Seahawks bowed to the Wildcats at North Miami. Joe Lopez recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Boycott Powell also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jaquan McKennon and Peterson Morency each registered nine points. McKennon made six assists and Lopez had three steals. Lopez and Jaron Cornish each blocked a shot.

Powell grabbed eight rebounds and Joe Lopez yanked six boards. McKennon made seven assists and Jaron Cornish distributed five. Cornish and Turner each swiped two basketballs. Lopez, Powell and Alaowei Talent each blocked a shot.

Nov. 30 - Broward 80 TAAG Academy 47
   Joe Allen scored 13 points and Jaquan McKennon added 10 to pace the Seahawks to a decisive victory over the Ambassadors at A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. Kyanti Blyden registered nine points and Joe Allen grabbed eight rebounds. Alaowei Talent pulled down seven boards and blocked three shots. McKennon had eight assists and Mike Cambridge made four steals. Broward built a 41-22 halftime lead.
 
Dec. 5 - Broward 109 Daytona State College 99
   Deandre Turner scored 22 points and Adam Traore poured in 21 to help the Seahawks defeat the Falcons at Davie. Jaquan McKennon recorded 19 points and Joe Lopez added 18. Boycott Powell pulled down 10 rebounds and Lopez grabbed eight boards. McKennon dished-out eight assists and Turner made three steals. Powell and Lopez each blocked a shot. Broward shot 62 percent (35 of 58) from the floor. Daytona State entered the game ranked fourth in the nation and first in the state rankings (Dec. 1).
 
Dec. 8 - Broward 136 Red Devils Academy 44
   Joe Lopez posted a double-double (28 points, 14 rebounds) and Deandre Turner scored 25 points to highlight a season-high scoring output for the Seahawks. Joe Allen contributed 24 points and eight rebounds. Jaron Cornish posted a quadruple-double with 14 points, 11 steals, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Adam Traore registered 12 points and Boycott Powell added 10. Peterson Morency made 10 assists and six steals. Cornish and Lopez blocked three shots.
 
Dec. 12 - Broward 91 Santa Fe College 89 (Overtime)
   Jaquan McKennon scored 21 points and Deandre Turner added 17 to help the Seahawks edge the Saints in overtime during the JUCO Shootout at Gainesville. Joe Lopez posted a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Jaron Cornish registered 14 points and Peterson Morency added 12. Boycott Powell grabbed nine rebounds, McKennon made three assists and Adam Traore had three steals. Lopez and Morency each blocked a shot. Broward rallied from a 41-26 halftime deficit by outscoring Santa Fe 55-40 in the second half to finish regulation tied at 81 and force overtime.
 
Dec. 13 - Broward 75 Cape Fear Community College 69
  Deandre Turner scored 23 points to help the Seahawks upend the Sea Devils and finish 2-0 at the JUCO Shootout. Joe Lopez posted a double-double (15 points, 13 rebounds) and blocked three shots. Jaquan McKennon contributed 13 points and seven assists. Adam Traore tallied 12 points and two steals. Boycott Powell grabbed 10 rebounds.
 

 
 BROWARD SPLITS HOME STAND AND SUFFERS ROAD LOSS TO DAYTONA STATE

Nov. 14 - Polk State College 86 Broward 83
The Seahawks suffered the first home defeat of the season after Elijah Cottrill’s three-pointer with one second left broke an 83-83 tie to give the Eagles the victory at A. Hugh Adams Central Campus. The loss spoiled stellar scoring performances from Deandre Turner (24 points) and Jaquan McKennon (22 points). Joe Lopez posted a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) and blocked three shots. McKennon dished-out eight assists and Kyanti Blyden grabbed six rebounds. McKennon, Turner, Peterson Morency and Adam Traore each made one steal. Broward led 40-36 at halftime and outshot Polk State from the floor 54 percent (33-61) to 39 percent (25-65) for the game. The Eagles entered the contest ranked sixth in the NJCAA Region 8 Coaches’ Poll (Nov. 10).

Nov. 18 - Broward 90 Florida National University (Junior Varsity) 69
Deandre Turner scored a season-high 29 points to lead the Seahawks to a decisive home victory over the Conquistadors at Davie. Adam Traore recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Joe Lopez registered a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) and blocked six shots. Joe Allen contributed 11 points and six rebounds. Peterson Morency tallied 10 points, five assists and four steals. Jaquan McKennon made seven assists. Broward outscored FNU 52-33 in the second half after leading at halftime 38-36. The Seahawks set season-highs in free throws made (26), offensive rebounds (27), total rebounds (53), steals (19) and blocked shots (eight).

Nov. 21 - Daytona State College 83 Broward 70
Deandre Turner scored 24 points and Adam Traore added 13, but the Seahawks fell to the Falcons at Daytona Beach. Turner also grabbed six rebounds and made two steals and Traore pulled-down six rebounds. Jaquan McKennon contributed 11 points, eight assists and two steals. Joe Lopez posted a double-double (10 points, 15 rebounds) and blocked five shots. Alaowei Talent tallied 10 points and six rebounds. The Falcons entered the game ranked third in the NJCAA Region 8 Coaches’ Poll (Nov. 17)

MEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON WITH A TWO-GAME HOME STAND AGAINST BARRY UNIVERSITY THIS FRIDAY AND CHIPOLA COLLEGE SUNDAY

 

   This weekend, the men’s basketball team opens the season with a two-game home stand. On Friday, Broward battles Barry University (Junior Varsity) at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Seahawks take on the Indians of Chipola College at 2 p.m.

   Bob Starkman enters his 15th season as head coach of the men’s team and has three returning players in guards Kyanti Blyden, Jacob Simonson and Deandre Turner. Last year, Blyden was selected all-Southern Conference honorable mention after contributing 197 points, 97 rebounds, 18 assists, 20 steals and 12 blocks. Simonson produced 32 points, 23 rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block. Turner was named first team all-Southern Conference after topping the Seahawks in field goal attempts (469), field goals (179) three-point attempts (251), three-pointers (92), free throw attempts (216), free throws (179), free throw percentage (82.9) and points (629). Turner finished 19th in the NJCAA in points per game (21.0), 21st in points and 37th in free throw percentage.


MICKLE SIGNS SCHOLARSHIP
TO FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY

 

   Kevin Mickle signed a scholarship to Florida Gulf Coast University. Mickle played 29 games and averaged 13.6 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. He led the Seahawks in field goal percentage (54.7), offensive rebounds (121), total rebounds (275) and blocks (48).

   Mickle received NJCAA and FCSAA Player of the Week honors (Jan. 5-11) after averaging 27.5 points, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks in two games to help Broward to conference victories over Palm Beach State College and Miami Dade College. In the game against Palm Beach State on Jan. 7, Mickle posted a double-double by scoring a season-high 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Seahawks to a 77-74 victory at Lake Worth. Mickle connected on 10 of 15 field goals and drained 11 of 14 free throws.

   On Jan. 3rd against Wytheville (Va.) Community College, Mickle posted a season-high in rebounds (18) and tied a season-high in blocks (five) to help the Seahawks to a 78-68 victory during the Eastern Florida State College tournament at Melbourne. He was named first team all-Southern Conference following the 2014-15 season, joining teammates Deandre Turner and Jayvian Delacruz. William Cruz and Mikhail Rolle received second team all- conference honors and Kyanti Blyden was named honorable mention.
