RENEW - Refugees Entering New Enterprises & Workforce



A variety of job readiness training is available to refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking living in Broward County.

Attendance/Withdrawal Policies

Attendance Policy:
  • Students are expected to notify their instructor and/or his/her advisor when he/she is absent.
  • After three consecutive absences without notification, the student will be withdrawn from the class.
  • If a student misses a class meeting, s/he is responsible for all work done in class and homework is due upon return.
Withdrawal Policy:

If a student withdraws from two classes, s/he will not be allowed to re-enroll. Only in special circumstances, approved by the program manager, will an exception be considered.


RENEW services are free for eligible students.
Course materials are provided for in-class use at no charge. Project RENEW may also pay for approved training resources. Some resources are paid up front by student.​​


To be eligible for RENEW, students must be:

  1. at least 18 years old;
  2. a resident of Broward County;
  3. employed/registered with an Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) employment provider

Who can apply?

  1. Asylee of all nationalities (first five years)
  2. Refugees of all nationalities (first five years)
  3. Cuban/Haitian entrants (including asylum applicants)
  4. Amerasians
  5. Lawful permanent residents who adjusted from prior refugee, entrant or asylum status
  6. Certified victims of human trafficking
  7. Special immigrants from Iraq or Afghanistan
Please call to schedule an eligibility interview. You will need to bring the following documents with you to this appointment (as applicable to you):
  1. I-94
  2. Social Security card
  3. Employment Authorization card
  4. Permanent Residence card
  5. Driver license or Florida ID
  6. Asylum Letter of Order
  7. Asylum Application Receipt (for entrants and/or parolees from Cuba or Haiti only)
  8. Work information or referral from ORR Services, Youth COOP, or Workforce One

Program Highlights

Available programs include:

  • Career counseling and employability skills
  • Citizenship classes: RENEW offers citizenship and Civics instruction for lawful permanent residents who reside in Broward County. Students who successfully complete the course receive a Certificate of Completion.
  • English for literacy, accent modification and conversation
  • ESOL: English for Speakers of Other Languages (six levels)
  • Referrals for employment and legal services
  • Standardized test preparation
  • Vocational & continuing education training
  • Workplace readiness and computer literacy skills

Esol students in classroom. 


  • RENEW Offers six levels of ESOL courses.
  • Before registering for classes, all students must take the English placement test (CASAS) to determine level of instruction.
  • Each ESOL course is 14-16 weeks in length.
  • Books are available for students to use during class.
  • Each ESOL course level has a departmental final exam.
Students must complete ESOL level three to be eligible to be enrolled in Continuing Education Workforce/Vocational courses. 

Transportation assistance & other services

  • Child care: RENEW will refer participants to local child care centers that will provide child care assistance to eligible applicants.
  • Employment Referrals: RENEW will refer participants to local Job Service Providers for employment assistance.
  • Transportation: Transportation assitance (public transportation passes) are available to a limited number of eligible students.
    • To be eligible to receive transportation assistance, students must be currently registered for classes and must demonstrate regular attendance (regular attendace = no more than 3 absences per semester)
  • Transcript translation/evaluation: Translations and evaluations of foreign-earned credentials may be subsidized for eligible students.
    • To be eligible for this service the client must be enrolled in a RENEW funded PSAV program and the translation/evaluation of documents must be a pre-requisite of the PSAV program. Receipt of this service is subject to availability of grant funds.
